Vineyard Notes
2022 was marked by extremes. First, we experienced a remarkably long and wet spring, which transitioned into a blistering summer, followed by an extended ripening season with little threat of smoke and ideal conditions. However, towards the end of the year, we faced catastrophic freezing. This wine consists of 100% Estate-grown and organically farmed grapes. It was a very forgiving vintage with perfect fruit. The 2022 wines will age for 7 - 15 years and develop into world-class examples of Bordeaux varieties here in the South Okanagan. This is a rare, classic vintage from BC that we suggest collecting, as the 2022 French Door red wines are our best vintage yet!
Production Notes
After the Malbec was harvested, we destemmed the grapes for a whole-berry fermentation in our wooden Tonneau tank. The fruit underwent cold soaking for 3 days at 5°C to extract the deep magenta colour. Pump-overs were performed twice a day for 30 minutes under dry ice, with one delestage. The fermentation temperature was maintained at 30 degrees Celsius post-fermentation to develop tannin structure and lock in colour. The free-run juice was drained directly into barrels, primarily mild toast barrels, while the pressed wine was transferred into neutral puncheons. Subsequently, the wine was aged for 16 months with one racking in July into fifth-fill neutral barrels. The 140 cases produced represent a selection of eight of our finest Malbec barrels.
